Few things in Army life are as great as having friends from a previous duty station come to visit!! This week we were lucky enough to have some of our very best friends from Alaska come down for day of fun. The Browns were lifesavers for me when Jake was last deployed. They were always willing to help with the kids or anything I needed around the house. Their oldest Zachary and Scarlet will probably one day be married!! They were beyond excited to see each other, and held hands the whole time we toured the Aviation Museum! Any Army family will tell you that your surrogate Army family is just as important as your blood one.
While we were station in Alaska we often had morning play dates with the Brown's and we'd often do breakfast together. So, in keeping with tradition, I served breakfast for lunch! We had an assortment of fruit, a country quiche, and buttermilk pancakes with buttermilk syrup!! These pancakes are my new obsession. I could eat them day and night!!
No great pic of the quiche, but you can almost see it in the background! This recipe comes from the cookbook, "Home Cooking with Trisha Yearwood".
Country Quiche
1 pound ground pork sausage with sage
6 large eggs
t teaspoon baking powder
20 grape tomatoes, sliced in half
10 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, grated (about 2 1/2 cups)
salt and pepper
2 9-inch unbaked frozen pie shells
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large skillet, cook the sausage until done, then drain off the excess fat and set aside.
Whisk the eggs, baking powder, and tomatoes together. Add the cooked sausage and the cheese to the egg mixture and stir together with a large spoon. Add sale and pepper to taste. Divide the mixture in half and our into the unbaked pie shells. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the filling is set.

These brownies are special to me and Zachary. They were often what he requested if he was coming over to play, so I thought it fitting to make him some! This recipe comes from Paula Deen's,"The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook". These are so easy you'll never make them from a box again!
Lady Brownies
(aka Zachary Brown Brownies)
2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
6 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 cup chopped walnut or pecans (optional)
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Blend together sugar, oil eggs, cocoa, and vanilla. Add flour, mix. Add nuts; spread into greased 13x9 inch baking dish. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
It was so great to have them come and visit us! The best thing about Army life is that you never know where you might go or who you might see next! Good luck to the Brown family on their new adventure!
Promise to be back this weekend for an amazing twist on Mexican food. Think grits and blue corn tortilla chips!
